I have been doing wallpapers for several years now, heck many of the wallpapers I did are still floating on the internet. They are not perfect but lots of people likes them. If you are interested in doing a wallpaper, you are at the right place. I will share my knowledge for anyone interested. This is the first of several tutorials so stick around and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask.

If you always wanted a wallpaper and wanted it for your desktop, the first thing you need to know is your resolution. I usually work with the 1600×1200 resolution because it is the max resolution for my PC. Know your resolution before you work.

PS

First, use a good image editing program. I use Adobe Photoshop, but there are others programs that you can use. The important thing is that the program must allow to trace, crop, etc. Basic tools.

The next thing is to choose your favorite image and extract it. I liked this image because I could place her at any environment. I use the magic lasso or the path tool to extract her from the original background. It takes time, lots of time and if you make a mistake, you have to do it again.

PS

Next thing is to do a shadow under the image we just extract. This is to give her more depth. I create a shape with the path tool and then flatten the image. Then I apply some blur on the shape to give the shadow effect. Make sure the size of the shadow goes accordingly with the shape of the figure. Use some common sense and also some physics knowledge will be good for you. (Light and Shadow)

PS

Finally we look for the background. I like this background. It seems so lonely. I call it the lonely road.  “Life is not the destination, but the journey we take.”

Finally I blend all the images with cut / copy / paste in a single layer and add the texts and credits. I must admit that the only problem I can find about the image and background is the size proportion.  You can always try to reduce the size of the image to adapt it with the background but in this case the girl could look too small to appreciate her better.

Another cool thing is that if you want to “spice” things up, you can add light effects. Look for them on your favorite search engine (Google, Yahoo, etc) There are tons of plugins you can use. Use them in a subtle manner. Many people tend to overcharge wallpapers with tons of effects and thats a mistake.  With the help of special effects, you can give the wallpaper a more “anime” look into it.

Remember that this is one of the easiest way to do a wallpaper. I think the EASIEST (2 Steps) way to do a wallie is to crop a BIG image and resize it to wallpaper resolutions, but better be more creative than that. There are lots of other techniques and plugins. Dont overcharge your image and keep it simple.  Look for your favorite images and play with them.

The images portrayed here are for educational purposes and owned by their original copyright holders. I will keep posting more advanced techniques so stay tuned!
